Is the iPhone 4 to be recalled?

The maligned iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 has not had a smooth release; firstly it was leaked online when an Apple employee drunkenly left it in a bar, then it faced all sorts of scrutiny when it was discovered left-handed people couldn't use it due to them blocking the signal receiver.

Needless to say, left-handed users the world over were incensed. Now, Apple has announced a special press conference about its problematic iPhone 4 prompting speculation of a recall. While details of the announcement are vague, a spokesman has confirmed it will address the new model's reception problems.

Rumours abound that the tech-giant will offer a solution, but if the answer is along the lines of their solution a few weeks ago of "just hold it in your right hand", the Apple fanbase might rapidly diminish.

Design flaw

Many of the complaints about the iPhone are to do with the design which sees the antenna installed in a stainless steel band around the phone's frame. Since its release, Apple has been inundated with complaints about calls being cut off or being unable to receive any reception if the phone is held in a particular way.

Industry leaders have said while the design was innovative, it was risky because it exposes the antenna to touch. The issue has threatened to tarnish Apple's sheen in the tech community, especially as Apple have been slow to recognise and deal with the problem.

As a result, despite massive sales many users and tech blogs have been unsatisfied with the iPhone 4, making it the first time an Apple phone has not been endorsed by product-quality watchdogs.

While a recall has been suggested, it is not likely due to the massive cost. Instead a work-around is anticipated, mostly likely the giving away of Apple's £19 rubber "bumper" case, which it believes could solve the reception problem.

Time will tell; the press conference will be held on Friday at 6pm UK time.
